Published Sat 21 Dec 2019

Greetings everyone

Counting down the days until Christmas holidays …..but first a little more reading to help you plan your orienteering life in 2020. Details on the Schools Summer Sprint Series will be in the January newsletter.

A number of club members participated in the Under 23 High Performance Camp and in the Junior Development Camp and there are excellent reports about these in the latest Compass Point newsletter:

  3. Calendar of Orienteering Events for 2020

1 Sprint the Bay

You might have heard that Sprint The Bay is returning in 2020! After a 5 year hiatus, the event is back and we are excited to take it to a whole other level!

In 2020, the races will be held in the Hawkes Bay from 31 Jan to 2 Feb, coinciding with the Lonely Mountain Sprint the weekend before in New Plymouth to form an unofficial sprint orienteering carnival, including 6 days of sprint orienteering across the two weeks, and 3 days in between to see the sites of the Central North Island, and rest the legs!

For those that don’t know, Sprint The Bay is a 3 Day, 6 Stage Orienteering competition. Each race contributes to an overall time, and the winner is the one with the fastest combined time after all six stages have been run!

We have grades and courses to suit all abilities, and some of our biggest fields are in the vets and junior categories! Sprint orienteering is the best way to start out in the sport, so even if you’re not super experienced or no someone who isn’t bring them along, have a sweet holiday in the Hawkes Bay and give it a go while you’re there!

Sprint The Bay is renowned for being innovative when it comes to courses and maps, having the best arena atmosphere, and being all about the competitor experience! We have epic prizes lined up thanks to our Sponsors, a cool function night planned after Stage 4 including a Q&A with top athletes, along with other fun activities (and great beer, wine and food!) and above all unforgettable times with your mates!

Couple that with spending time in the stunning Hawkes Bay, where the weather is at its best (we promise!) the food and wine is absolutely to die for, and you have plenty to do when you’re not out racing!

In the Elite Class, much like in the Tour de France, we have coloured singlets to represent leaders in different classifications. These include:
The Yellow Singlet: Overall leader in the General Classification

The White Singlet: Leading Junior (U20) in the General Classification of the elite grade

The Green Singlet: The Fastest Sprinter (A points based system calculated on specified legs in each course)

The Polka Dot Singlet: The Best Hill Climber (A points based system calculated on specific legs in each course)

Do not miss out on this amazing event in 2020, who knows when it will be back again?!
