Dogs

There is currently a possum poison programme underway that is a potential risk to dogs. The suggestion is no dogs at events until 24 April at the earliest.

Due to the nature of Double Tap (an anticoagulant toxin that can remain active in possum carcasses for several weeks), there is a risk of secondary poisoning while poisoned possums are still present or carcasses remain on the ground. For this reason, we do not recommend dogs accessing the area until at least 24 April, at the earliest.

Dog emetic pills are most effective when administered as soon as possible, ideally within 30–60 minutes and no later than 1–2 hours after concern that a dog may have ingested a poisoned carcas/ or a poison bait, and should be followed by immediate veterinary advice.

Event Details

This early season forest event is a good opportunity to build or refresh your forest orienteering skills. You are welcome to go out in groups or with a more experienced person - enter as an individual (so each person gets a map) and then start together. Another option is start with a whote or yellow course and then try a second course afterwards. Enter for your first course and then go to registration before starting your second course (no fee payable for the second course).

  • Start any time between 10:00am and 12:00pm (noon). If you would like do do more than one course, please ensure you restart before 12:00pm.
  • Courses close: 2:00pm unless otherwise stated. Please plan and ensure you return to the finish by course closure time

Approximate Course Lengths

Red 1  8.1km
Red 2 6.6km
Red 3 5km
Red 4 3.9km
Purple  2.8km
Orange Long  5.4km
Orange Short   3.5km
Yellow 2.9km
White 2.9km

White   Very easy.  Controls (= checkpoints) are on tracks or linear features such as fences, streams etc.
Yellow  Easy. Controls are on or visible from linear features such as tracks, fences, streams and vegetation boundaries.
Orange Short  Moderate difficulty. You should only choose an orange course if you have successfully completed Yellow courses.  The course will offer route choice to controls which are NOT on tracks. You should understand contours and be able to use a compass to determine direction.
Orange Long  Moderate difficulty. As above, but a longer distance.
Red 1,2,3 & 4  Difficult, technical courses for more experienced orienteers.  You should only choose a red course if you have successfully completed several orange level courses. Courses have route choice, areas of complex detail, and small point features.
Purple  Technically difficult (like red courses) but less physically challenging course aimed at older orienteers.
