NWOC Newsletter August 2022

Kia Ora all. I hope winter is treating you well enough while I romp around Europe and North America. It already feels like a long season to some of us, but we have new members joining all the time who are at different stages of their orienteering adventure. We need to actively welcome and support these new members to get connected and develop their skills. So look out for new members at our upcoming club lunch and keep an ear out for what training advice new members might benefit from.                Gene Beveridge, President

Sunday 28 August - NWOC lunch at AOS10

Come and join us for lunch on Sunday 28 August. Auckland Orienteering Club is hosting AOS10 on this day and since we won’t be busy with event organisation, we thought it would be nice for North West members to enjoy lunch together at the event.  The Club will provide Subway sandwiches and sushi plus tea and coffee.  Please BYO a thermos if you have one and your own cup for a drink.  Lunch will start around 12.15 - 12.30pm.

Pre-entry is preferred for AOS10 so we will cater for the number of North West members who have pre-entered by Friday 26 August, the closing date for entry. Pre-entry is open now here Event details here

Major Events

Sunday 16 October; North West Club Champs as part of AOS12

Auckland Orienteering Club will host this event to be held on the Mushroom Road map in Woodhill Forest. And to encourage North West members to enter and contest the NWOC Club Champs, the Committee has agreed to pay entry fees for all members who enter this event.  More details to come.

Labour Weekend; Tūāraki North Regional Champs 2022 - hosted by North West.

Saturday 22 October to Monday 24 October

Three days of classic Woodhill Forest terrain. Maps include the northern reaches of the 2017 World Masters final Hedley Dunes map and the 2021 NZ Champs Karaka Swamp map. Much of the terrain has only been used once. Maps are being updated now. This opportunity to spend three days on beautiful maps and join in the fun of being the host club is not to be missed. While the event name includes the term Champs - the event is not just for want-to-be champions! There are courses to suit orienteers at all levels.  A special invite to our new members to come and experience the fun of a multi day orienteering carnival.  Pre-entry opening soon.  Event website here

Event Reports

Auckland Secondary Schools Rogaine Champs

On Tuesday 9 August, Lactic Turkey events, in conjunction with North West, organised the Auckland Secondary Schools Rogaine Champs in Riverhead Forest.  Lisa Mead was one of several North West members who helped out on the day and reports: ‘Shaun organised a great event with a team of NWOC volunteers backing him up and in particular putting out controls early that morning.  Thanks to Darren and Lana Gosse, Tim Longson, Steve Pyatt and Geoff Mead who seemed to enjoy the workout in the mud and up and over the hills! The course provided plenty of challenge for the serious orienteers (one team got all but one of the controls), while still offering plenty of straightforward checkpoints for the less experienced. The mud was bountiful but that didn't dampen spirits or the fun factor.’  Watch a video of the start here

North West Club Training Day - Sunday 14 August

There was a great response to the training day offered to members with a group of 30 enjoying a fabulous day in the forest on Sunday 14 August. Exercises included using handrails as part of your navigation plan, fine-tuning compass bearings and relocating. With with a great ratio of coaches to coachees, all those who attended agreed it was very worthwhile.  And the cake we enjoyed together afterwards was good too! Thanks to Rob Garden & Marquita Gelderman for planning the exercises and organising the event and to all those members who volunteered as coaches.
