North West Working Bee for New Map - Sunday 21 December

Can You Help Please?

North West Members, Paul Ireland & Andrew de L'Isle, are developing a new map area in Riverhead Forest. As with any new area, a network of tracks needs to be made to  suit white and yellow courses. Paul & Andrew are keen to get the tracks in place before Paul starts mapping the area. A working bee is planned for Sunday, 21 December and help from anyone who feels like a pre-Christmas work out is welcome.
Details
9am - Meet at the Spinlay Road entrance to Riverhead Forest - this is off Blackbridge Road, Dairy Flat. Paul & Andrew will there all day to approx. 4pm; if others can help all day that would be great; if not, a few hours to half a day's help would make a big difference.
Bring - the most helpful tools are rakes and grubber tools.  BYO food and drink.

Please text Andrew on 027 294 7991 to advise if you can help.
As is typical in forest, mobile reception could be patchy. If you plan to arrive late or are delayed on the day, please text Andrew, ideally before 9am.

This is an exciting new area with lots of interesting features; it's a bit different to some other areas of Riverhead Forest previously used for events and will be a welcome addition to North West's map repository.

Oceania Championships in Canberra 2026

Rob Garden is coordinating accommodation for North West members who would like to attend Oceania 2026 to be held near Canberra from 26 September to 4 October.  Oceania 2026 promises 9 days of out-of-this-world orienteering - the carnival includes the full stack of events: Sprint, Middle, Long and Relay, plus the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships during the week. All Oceania and ASOC events will be easy day trips from Canberra. See latest event info here

Rob proposes a group booking for North West members at Alivio Tourist Park, only 4km from the centre of Canberra. Rob says, 'Alivio Tourist Park will really suit a group of NWOC members providing a great space to socialise in the evenings and talk over maps. The midweek school events will have events for the public, providing for a very full week of orienteering, straight after the Auckland Forest Cup series.'

Rob would love to see more parents having a go at orienteering next year, and Oceania 2026 will provide courses for inexperienced adults. As well, North West is aiming to organise at least 5 club coaching days next year.

If you are interested in being part of an NWOC group at Oceania 2026, please email Rob on rgmg@xtra.co.nzAccommodation needs to be secured now but can be cancelled later at no cost.

Schools Orienteering

The 2026 Auckland Schools Orienteering Calendar for the Auckland region is complete. Dates for Schools’ competitions will be available on the Auckland Schools Orienteering website soon.

North West Club History

Unofficial Club Historian, Geoff Mead, has compiled some notes on the history of North West Club. You can read these here

At the club end-of-year event held on Sunday 30 November, there was a display of notes, old maps and photos from the early days of North West. The display sparked a lot of interest and there was much reminiscing, especially about old maps.

Geoff would like to pay tribute to Club Member, Mary Moen for the use of her collection of old maps, newsletters, photos and newspaper articles. Mary was the Club Captain in February 1977 when the name "North West Orienteering" was agreed at an AGM meeting." We believe Mary is the only founding member of North West who is still actively orienteering - in 2025 Mary won the NWOC champs in her grade.

Newsletter Editor, Jenny, had a chat to Mary about her recollections of orienteering. Here’s her story.

Mary’s first foray into orienteering was in 1972 while living in Boston in the United States where her husband, Terje Moen, was studying at Harvard University. Mary & Terje heard that the Cambridge Sports Union was starting orienteering and they went along to give the sport a try. Then, when they returned to New Zealand, Terje’s father Sverre and friend Gordon Pirie, had been active in forming the Auckland Orienteering Association and they were able to continue their involvement.

Mary says she was never a runner and orienteering appealed because it involves exercising with a challenge. As well, as a nature lover, Mary enjoys being outdoors and the opportunity that orienteering offers to explore new places has been a key aspect of her enjoyment of the sport.

The fact that orienteering is something a family can do together, and across generations, has been another attraction for Mary. Marit and Lise, Mary & Terje’s two daughters, joined North West from a young age and now their children participate too.

Orienteering has been part of the Moen family’s travel plans – as a family of four, they went to events in Australia every year. While living in Norway for three years during the 1980s, they went to events in Italy and also to several Oringens, the world's largest multi-day orienteering event, held annually in July in Sweden. Mary commented how wonderful it was to be part of the worldwide community of orienteering and have friends in many different countries.

Oringen was always a special experience because of the sheer numbers who attend each year. Around 1975, Mary recalls a crowd of 25000 gathering and being impressed by the great organisation of such a big event.

As a former Club Captain of North West and organiser of Schools events for the Auckland area, Mary has seen many changes in orienteering over the past 50 years. Specifically, she commented about how sprint events and rogaines are popular now whereas previously events were almost always ‘the good old fashioned traditional style’. Mary laments that ‘gone are the days of easy access to forests; she recalls a key being left out to allow access to a forest when it suited those involved with an event’. Today, the protocols for forest access are much more complicated!

Lastly, I asked Mary what advice she would give anyone thinking about giving orienteering a try. ‘Go for it, come and try it and get involved’ – it’s a wonderful sport.
